Walking is a free way to improve your well-being: it can reduce stress and improve your connections with community and nature. A walkable campus and a non-sedentary culture can help all of us build a healthy and thriving college community.
Why Walk?
Adults age 18-64 years should perform a variety of types and intensities of physical activity, which includes moderate to vigorous athletic activities (150 minutes per week) and several hours of light physical activities. Learn more about the Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines.
Walking can:
- Boost your creativity
- Improve your mood
- Enhance cognitive performance
- Lower your risk of developing chronic health conditions
- Create opportunities for new social connections & combat loneliness
- Wear proper footwear and bring clothing appropriate to the ever-changing west coast weather
- When possible, try walk meeting with a friend, classmate or colleague. Walking with others makes you more likely to walk more often and it’s a better option for safety too!
- Bring a notepad & pen and take a few minutes to jot down notes, ideas or reminders at the end of the walk.
- Accessible routes designated on the walking maps are entirely paved pathways with curb ramps where necessary (and very small ranges in slope).
- Pick up the pace for more benefits for your well-being. Being out of breath is a good sign that you’re starting to work on your cardiovascular fitness.
- Choose a route that gives you some time before your class or meeting. Everyone has a slightly different pace & you’ll likely want a bit of time to transition into the next class, meeting or activity—being rushed might make you walk faster but it also might add unnecessary stress.
Guided Well-Being Walks
As a pilot in the Winter 2023 term, NIC is offering guided walks at the Campbell River and Comox Valley campuses for students, employees and community members. Check back here for further details about these events.
Terrain Notice: These walks will be on varied terrain in forest trails so they may not be appropriate for all participants. Appropriate footwear is recommended to be able to properly navigate gravel, dirt and/or muddy sections.

Walking Routes
These are some suggested walking routes on campus that were created in January 2023. If you notice an issue of concern on a route that you feel should be noted, you would like to submit a new route or host a guided walk, please contact communications@nic.bc.ca.
Thanks to a CARE grant in 2022, we have created these digital maps as a resource and are working on campus signage.
