The annual Orientation Day event takes place at each NIC campus to welcome students, staff and faculty back to campus. Classes will begin the following day on Wednesday, Sep. 5.
The Campbell River campus is welcoming more than 370 students this year in trades, health, university transfer and upgrading programs, along with expanded university transfer and business courses, enabling students to complete their Business Administration certificate on site.
“This is an exciting year for our Campbell River campus,” said Randall Heidt, NIC vice-president of strategic initiatives. “Along with our expanded course offerings, the $17.6 million Campbell River expansion and renovation project continues, with new learning areas and renovated spaces for NIC and Timberline Secondary School students.”
While the expansion is still underway, new features include the new location of the bookstore and library in E-wing, which is also home to new washrooms and shower facilities. NIC’s Office of Global Engagement is now on campus, with offices in room A222.
“All our staff are working to ensure there is minimal disruption for students in classes while work continues throughout the term,” said Heidt.
Orientation Day begins with a breakfast at the Gathering Place with bannock, coffee and tea, followed by the official welcome to the new college year.
Students will also have the chance to take part in workshops to help them prepare for the upcoming term including student technical support, an introduction to the Library & Learning Commons, peer tutoring and financial support. Following a campus tour, students will meet their faculty and classmates during their program introductions.
The afternoon starts with a free lunch, followed by a marketplace with local vendors and community organizations, music, activities, games and prizes.
