NIC recognized faculty Derek Hanebury and John Marton June 1, with Emeritus designations for outstanding work that has inspired generations of NIC students.
The prestigious Emeritus title recognizes excellence in teaching, research and service, as well as dedication to the development and success of students.
Hanebury taught at NIC from 1988 to 2017 and won the NISOD Award in 2013 for teaching excellence, as well as multiple awards for his creative writing.
NIC paid tribute to Hanebury at its year-end staff celebration in the Comox Valley.
“Derek has contributed extensive time and commitment to creating educational and professional growth at NIC,” said Laurie Tulloch, who chairs the Emeritus committee. “We are grateful for his decades of service and are proud to honour him.”
Hanebury provided 29 years of innovative, student-centered teaching, primarily at NIC’s Port Alberni campus as an English instructor and chair of NIC’s Student Success Committee. He also played a key role in NIC’s implementation of education technology in the teaching and learning process, including the Knowledge Network, Interactive TV and online delivery.
“Derek is highly respected by his colleagues for his excellence in teaching, and for his thoughtful and active contributions to the English department, to the college as a whole, to Canadian literature and to the communities of the North Island College region,” said Mac Newton, a fellow NIC English Instructor.
Marton, a psychology instructor from 1993 to 2015, also received 2018 Emeritus status for his outstanding contributions to teaching and research excellence at NIC.
An Emeritus designation provides recipients an opportunity to stay involved with the college after retirement, providing access to NIC facilities and services as well as participation in mentorship, research, strategic direction and scholarship activities.
Faculty, support and administrative staff nominate their peers and are selected by NIC’s president and senior leadership team. To be eligible, recipients must have worked at NIC for at least 10 years, demonstrate teaching, service or research excellence and contribute significantly to student success or the educational community.
