“Scott Bertram is an exciting addition to our fall line-up of guest artists,” said NIC Artist Talk coordinator and Fine Art and Design department chair Sara Vipond. “His work captures what it means to be an artist: taking risks, being expressive, finding your own voice. We’re fortunate to have him join us.”
Bertram is an abstract painter whose practice centres on ideas of improvisation, finding meaning within unintended stimuli and playing with the dynamics of perception.
His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Two Rivers Art Gallery in Prince George; the Forest City Gallery in London, Ont.; and Galerie BAC in Montreal.
Bertram’s work has also featured in group exhibitions at The Power Plant in Toronto; Dalhousie Art Gallery in Halifax; and the Art Gallery of Calgary, among other exhibitions in the USA, Australia, Germany, Mexico, and the UK.
Bertram was also a semi-finalist in the 12th RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Other accolades include honourable mention for the HRM Contemporary Visual Art Purchase Program, an SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship, and two BC Arts Council Senior Scholarship Awards.
He holds a BFA from the University of British Columbia Okanagan and an MFA from NSCAD University in Nova Scotia.
Bertram speaks from 6 to 7 pm at the Stan Hagen Theatre on the Comox Valley campus. Admission is free and everyone is invited.
The NIC Artist Talk series continues to offer an engaging line-up of speakers that fosters students and professional artists in the community. Upcoming artists include Skeena Reece (November 8) and Kelly Richardson (November 22). The series started September 27 with prominent Canadian painter Landon Mackenzie and featured celebrated Victoria-based artist Mowry Baden on October 11.
