NIC in the News: Seaweed Innovation Hub

The federal government is providing funding to North Island College to set up a Seaweed Innovation Hub (SIH) to advance the province’s sustainable seaweed industry.

Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), announced the $881,600 in funding on Feb. 20.

The SIH will be a project of NIC’s Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation (CARTI).

“Seaweed presents unique opportunities for both social and economic innovation,” NIC President and CEO Lisa Domae said in the release. “This project will help accelerate the Canadian seaweed sector by addressing community and industry needs, driving innovation and advancing NIC’s leadership in the blue economy with the potential for global impact.”

The federal government is also providing $250,000 to the BC Shellfish Growers’ Association to help modernization of industry practices, accountability and communication.
