Storm season & campus closures

With the arrival of winter and storm season, we wanted to share processes that are in place in case of severe weather that may affect college operations.

Campus closures decisions at NIC are based on a number of factors, including the safety of students and employees, road conditions, campus conditions, forecasts and emergency alerts.

Decisions regarding campus or college-wide closure are made as early as possible, by 6:30 am, if the weather event occurred throughout the night. A specific closure message will be posted to the College’s website detailing the affected campuses and classes.

In the event of deteriorating weather conditions during the day, a notice will be posted to the NIC website. Decisions regarding evening classes and activities will be made prior to 2 pm.

Please note that if you are learning or working remotely, you may be affected by campus closures in the Comox Valley and Campbell River. For more information, see our process for campus closures.

Employee Information

When campuses are closed due to inclement weather, buildings are alarmed and secured. You will need an access code from facilities to enter the building.  Roads may be inaccessible while snow clearing crews to do their work. If you need to come to campus, notify your supervisor and ensure you are following working alone procedures.

Re-opening

Following a weather-related closure, the NIC website will be updated to indicate a return to normal operations.

We know our region covers a large area and weather and road conditions can vary widely. Please use your best judgement when deciding to travel in winter weather conditions. If you are unable to attend campus, students should contact their instructor and employees should contact their supervisor.
