NIC campuses in the Comox Valley, Campbell River and Port Alberni will fly the Canadian Legion Poppy Flags and an Orange Flag until November 12. All College campuses will be closed for Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
The Poppy Flags are a testament to Remembrance Day, a day to reflect, remember and give thanks to the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. The flags are just one of the ways Canadians show their support. Many people also wear a poppy and mark a moment of silence on Indigenous Veterans Day on Nov. 8 and Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
The Orange Flags are an expression of remembrance, meant to honour residential school survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada.
The Canadian Flag has been flown at half-mast on NIC campuses since May when the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation announced the remains of 215 children found on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Since then, additional burial sites have been identified across Canada.
