The Students' Union at North Island College celebrated its 25-year anniversary with a $25,000 gift to future students.
The $25,000 donation from the North Island Students’ Union (NISU) which will be received over five years, will boost the amount of money available to NIC students through an annual bursary.
“This substantial gift will greatly enhance the support we are able to provide students who receive the bursary each year,” said NISU chairperson Mary Rickinson.
Formed in 1991, NISU represents NIC students across the region, advocating for high quality, affordable and accessible post-secondary education. In 2009, NISU created the North Island Students’ Union Bursary with a $10,000 donation to establish a named endowment through the NIC Foundation.
The bursary has supported three continuing students attending any NIC program across the region each year since 2011. Applicants must have a demonstrated financial need and preference is given to students actively involved in volunteering or community service.
“This donation for students, by students is incredible,” said Robert Buckley, NIC Foundation Board Chair. “We want to thank NISU for their passion, generosity and foresight. Their donation builds on the legacy they established in 2009 and represents a substantial investment in students and education on the North Island.”
The North Island Students’ Union Bursary is one of 350 awards available this year to students who apply to be considered for NIC Foundation scholarships and bursaries. The online awards application opened March 1, with an application deadline of April 30. For more information about NIC Foundation awards or to apply, visit foundation.nic.bc.ca/students.
In the past 25 years, the NIC Foundation has been dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support students through scholarships and bursaries, equip classrooms with current technology and ensure the best possible learning facilities are accessible at North Island College.
In that time, generous individuals and community organizations have provided more than $1.95 million in scholarships and bursaries to nearly 3,750 students region-wide. For many of these students, attending college would not have been possible without unwavering donor support.
