Research Ethics

All research undertaken at, or under the auspices of, North Island College that involves human participants requires ethical review and approval before data collection begins.

Do I Need Approval

If you are wondering if you need ethics approval, please see the NIC Research Ethics Info Sheet.

How do I apply for approval?

For researchers external to NIC

Contact the Research Ethics Board Chair to request an application.

For student, faculty, and staff researchers at NIC

For course-based research projects (NIC courses only)

If all students in an NIC class are doing the same or very similar primary research, and that research is minimal risk, the instructor seeks ethics approval using the form: PPM 1-12 B Application for Course-Based Research Ethics Approval - Instructor.

Where a course-based project has differing approaches or elements of risk from one student project to another, and a student’s research is minimal risk, the student applies for ethics approval, using the form: PPM 1-12 B Application for Course-Based Research Ethics Approval - Student.

Any course-based research that is definitely or potentially above minimal risk uses the main REB application (see PPM 1-12 C below). All applications are submitted to the Chair of the Research Ethics Board (REB) at reb@nic.bc.ca.

If you have questions about which form to use, or questions about any other aspect of the application and approval process, please contact the REB Chair.

For all research outside of NIC course-based projects

For research not related to an NIC course, researchers apply to the REB for approval using the form: PPM 1-12 C Application for Ethics Approval. Researchers external to NIC can obtain the application form by request to the REB Chair.

Applications for consideration at an upcoming REB meeting must be received by the REB Chair, 14 days prior to the meeting date (see meeting schedule link below).

Current NIC students, staff and faculty will find more information in the Research Ethics Board resource page of myNIC.
