The Heavy Equipment Operator Foundation program prepares you for work in the road construction industry. You’ll learn safe work practices, equipment knowledge, job control and environmental practices. You’ll also be introduced to articulated haul truck, loader, dozer, excavator and grader operation.

New and experienced operators are welcomed. This program will prepare you for local employment and provide certification opportunities.

This is a non-credit program offered through Continuing Education and Training.

Overview

This course builds on the general heavy construction content of the Road Builder and Heavy Construction Foundation Program, with additional training specific to heavy equipment, including the following:

  • Worksite health and safety
  • Types and capabilities of heavy equipment and attachments
  • Heavy equipment mechanical systems
  • Basic repairs, maintenance, inspection and monitoring of equipment
  • Job control and engineering basics, drawings and survey instruments
  • Environmental awareness and requirements, sediment control
  • Identification of mechanical components
  • Operating tips
  • Orientations to excavator, dozer, loader, grader and articulated haul truck
  • Excavator simulator training

Requirements and courses

  • HEO 060 HEO Foundation (Theory) Training
  • HEO 065 HEO Level 1 Technical Training

Completion Requirements

You must complete all courses in the program with a passing grade.

The program is a combination of 95 hours for HEO 060 and 125 hours for HEO 065.
