Journeying Together Graphic Recording by Carla Duffey – Annual Report Year 2

In fall 2022, NIC launched Journeying Together, Canada’s first-ever Indigenous-serving internationalization plan developed with the guidance and support of the Office of Indigenous Education, NIC Indigenous Education Council, NIC Elders and Indigenous community members. Journeying Together (JT) is an ongoing collaboration between the NIC Office of Indigenous Education and the Office of Global Engagement.

This plan just completed its 3rd year and weaves international and Indigenous education together so that visiting students and those who eventually become citizens understand the colonial history of Canada - its legacy and ongoing impacts - here and across international borders. It also strongly reflects interest from Indigenous students and communities to engage more actively in building Indigenous educational opportunities world-wide.

Journeying Together grew from the principles outlined in NIC’s first Indigenous education plan, Working Together and with the support and encouragement of the Indigenous Education Council, Elders and the Office of Indigenous Education.  The JT process provides a space for NIC to reflect, explore and reshape international learning in a way that furthers the primary principle. This contributes to NIC being an Indigenous serving institution delivering the best possible international education programming to all of our communities.

  • Slowing down to ensure we are all together, pulling in the same direction
  • Collecting and sharing student, faculty, staff, community and partner stories
