NIC is enriched by the diversity of our campus communities and is committed to fostering an accessible environment where everyone feels safe, valued and included.

Achieving this vision requires deliberate action and a sustained commitment to meaningful change. By embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles across all aspects of NIC’s programs and operations, we aim to build a more inclusive, collaborative and vibrant culture.

Strategic priorities

Input from NIC students and employees helped shape the strategic priorities outlined below, aligning goals and actions within NIC's existing strategic plans.

1. Leadership and operations

We'll establish infrastructure to implement and sustain effective DEI strategies by developing and aligning policies, procedures and processes that foster inclusion and belonging. Through ongoing dialogue, we aim to deepen understanding of DEI concepts and promote their practical application both individually and collectively.

2. Community, culture and belonging

We'll build connections and foster belonging by creating safe and inclusive spaces, encouraging collaboration and supporting academic and social programming and services that build inclusion and meet the unique needs of our diverse community.

3. Education and capacity building

We'll promote cultural competency and humility through orientation programs and ongoing personal and professional development opportunities for students and employees. By incorporating diverse perspectives and worldviews, we aim to enrich the experiences of our entire community.

4. Accessibility and support

We'll identify and remove barriers to participation in both physical and online environments and provide culturally appropriate and accessible services to support the success of a diverse student and employee community.

5. Truth and reconciliation

We'll ensure that Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing and being are integrated into our culture and governance, and that we build awareness of Indigenous histories and cultures through programs and curriculum integration.

6. Teaching and learning

We'll foster mutual learning and broaden perspectives by incorporating diverse student voices and applying a DEI lens to teaching practices and learning design. Programming will be continually refined to reflect cross-cultural knowledge, promote inclusivity and create accessible, supportive learning environments for educators and learners.
